What is zakat ?

The Zakat is one of the five pillars of islam, to the sides of the Shahada (profession of faith), of the Salât (prayer), the Invite (fasting the month of Ramadan) and the Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). It is a divine obligation that embodies the social, moral and spiritual life of the muslim faith. Allah says in the Quran :
"Perform the prayer and pay the Zakat " (Sura Al-Baqara, verse 43).
This verse highlights the inextricable link between the prayer and the Zakat, two essential acts that purify the heart and strengthen the solidarity within the community.

The term Zakat comes from the Arabic root " zakā ", which means "purify" and " to grow ". By the Zakat, the believer purifies his property and his soul from selfishness and excessive attachment to wealth. Allah further says :
"Takes their property to a charity by which you purify and bless them " (Sura At-Tawba, verse 103).
The Zakat is not a mere alms-giving : it is an act of purification and an active commitment to reduce inequality and poverty in the society.

« Those who are merciful will receive mercy of the All-Merciful.  »

Sunan Al-Tirmidhi

The Zakat is mentioned many times in the Quran, often associated with prayer (salât), stressing its importance :

"Perform the prayer and pay the Zakat. "
Qur'an, Sura Al-Baqara, verse 43

It involves taking a percentage (usually 2.5 %) of its wealth every year to redistribute to the poor and to those who need it most, in accordance with the verse : "Takes their property to a charity by which you purify and bless them " (Sura At-Tawba, verse 103). This compulsory contribution is not a single charity : the Prophet ﷺ said : "The one who pays the Zakat will be purified his property " (reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim). As well, giving the Zakat, the muslim purifies his property and his soul from selfishness, while affirming the dignity and brotherhood of each member of the community. So, do not hesitate to honor this noble task, because in the complying with, you are participating in the construction of a world that is more just and more merciful, and you deserve the divine mercy : "Those who are merciful will receive mercy of the All-Merciful". (reported by al-Tirmidhi).

Thus, the Zakat occupies a fundamental place in the life of a muslim. It purifies the goods, enhances faith and promotes social justice. Please do not hesitate to honor this important pillar of islam, because every donation – even a modest one – closer to the divine mercy and contributes to alleviating the suffering of those who need it the most.
Don't delay to give and share, because it is through the Zakat that the blessing is spreading and that the brotherhood was strengthened within the community.
